Lack of access to clean water is also a food security issue, as the primary use of freshwater worldwide is for watering crops (irrigation), currently accounting for 70 percent of freshwater withdrawals[1]. About 1.2 billion people live in areas where severe water shortages and scarcity challenge agriculture[2]. Over the last century, population growth, industrial and agricultural activities and living standards have created more demand for water across the world[3].
